Elders Helpline is a lifeline for
elders in distress. This is a joint venture between the Bangalore
City Police and Nightingales Medical Trust. The involvement
of the Police gives more value to the services and confidence
to elders.
The main objective of the Helpline is to ensure a life of
dignity and security to elders, free from abuse and exploitation.
The services include
counseling, resolving disputes,
reconciliation, legal advice, police intervention, tracing
of missing elders, providing information, advocacy, and creating
awareness.
The services are in good demand. Since its inception in April
2002, the Helpline has received 52,296 calls (as on 31st
March 2008) from elders in distress seeking advice, assistance or
information.
Out of the 4881 complaints registered
2160 are resolved. The trained counselors, social workers
and volunteers promptly respond to the calls. In cases of
family disputes, the counselors visit the homes of elders,
assess the nature of the problem and facilitate solutions
acceptable to both parties. Police intervention is provided
whenever necessary.
In cases where legal
issues are involved competent legal practitioners provide
free legal advice. Attempts are made to settle the dispute
through Alternate Dispute Redressal Mechanisms. The Alternative
Law Forum provides these services. If required cases are referred
to Lok Adalat (Peoples Court) for speedy disposal.
To enable more senior
citizens to have easy access, the Helpline services are now
extended to eight more police stations, two each in the northern,
southern, eastern and western parts of the city. Elders can
contact the Helpline easily through a toll free telephone
1090.
