In India, out of 80 million elders,
70% are living in rural areas. Compared to urban areas, most
villages today deplorably lack basic facilities. Almost all
health care facilities are concentrated only in towns and cities.
Due to illiteracy, poor nutrition and lack of awareness the
rural elders suffer in silence from disease that are preventable
and curable. To help such elders, as a pilot project Nightingales
has recently started this Mobile Medicare Programme. 15 villages
near Bangalore have been selected.
A team consisting of a Lady Doctor,
Social Worker and a Nurse visit the villages periodically to
provide basic curative care. Everyday the Mobile Clinic Van
visit three villages with a predetermined schedule. Each village
is covered once in a week. We plan to hold special medical camps
such as eye camp, dental camp etc. periodically. Cases requiring
specialized services are referred to nearby hospitals.The
mobile medical unit treats 800-1000 cases every monthand has
made a great difference in the health needs of the elders in
the villages covered.
