Nightingales conducted several training programmes in collaboration with National Institute of Social Defence,(NISD), New Delhi

   
1. Home Nursing  

As a pilot project, Nightingales has organized a training programme in Home Nursing for underprivileged women above 18 years age from September 2004 to March 2005. Twenty women participated and successfully completed the training. The training covered all necessary areas related to the care of the aged and the bedridden. Besides theoretical sessions the candidates were exposed to practicals at the homes of the patients where Nightingales is rendering domiciliary medical care. This training, besides helping the needy elders in getting the services of trained bedside assistants at an affordable cost, provides employment to underprivileged women. This training was recognized and sponsored by Government of Karnataka. In view of need and demand, now Nightingales is planning to make it a regular programme.

 

 
2. NGOs and Churches

Nightingales has organized a two day workshop in September 2005 for NGOs interested in establishing Day Care Centres and Helplines. 25 participants from various NGOs participated. Besides presentations on important topics related to the effective management of Helplines and Day Care Centres, field visits to the projects of Nightingales were arranged. This programme was sponsored by the Department of Welfare of Disabled and Senior Citizens, Government of Karnataka.

On 27th March 2006, we organized a training programme for the leaders of the Churches in eldercare. Representatives from all dioceses under Church of South India participated. Besides, sharing the experiences and success stories of Nightingales, we also oriented them on elder related issues and what the Church could do for the elderly. The participants also had a field visit to see the projects of Nightingales.

 
3. Geriatric Counselling

With the support of National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, Nightingales organized a five day workshop between 20th March to 24th March 2006. Thirty five key functionaries from various NGOs in southern part of India participated. The training covered Introduction to geriatric counselling, psychological factors related to the process of ageing, approaches to counselling, counselling process, preventive interventions, specialized interventions, strategies in counselling for elderly and a practical session on counselling. Field visits and role plays were also organized.

 
4. Management of Dementia
a five day workshop on Management of Dementia was held for functionaries of various non-governmental organizations working for the elderlyin February 2008. The aim was to spread awareness about Dementia and to build the capacity of personnel managing geriatric care facilities to understand, diagnose and manage persons suffering from Dementia.

 
5. Computer Training for Senior Citizens
A twenty day training programme was conducted in March 2008. The computer training aimed to facilitate opportunity for elders to gain computer knowledge and to help them adopt to the present day changed scenario. Preference was given to non pensioned low income senior citizens who are looking for jobs to sustain themselves. The training had one to one approach was conducted in an  innovative manner.
 
6. Six month Certificate Course in Geriatric Care

A six months certificate course in Geriatric Care was started in March 2008. The aim of this course is to orient the trainees about geriatric care and to equip them with the necessary knowledge to work effectively in institutions related to elder care like old age homes, hospitals and day care centres.
