World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2017

The World Elder Abuse Awareness and Prevention day observed on 15th June every year is dedicated to a call for action to individuals, organizations and communities to raise awareness of abuse, neglect and exploitation of older people.

The Elders Helpline, a joint project of Bangalore city police and Nightingales Medical Trust organized a Road show and Awareness campaign today to observe the World Elder Abuse Awareness and Prevention Day in Bangalore

This day was meaningfully observed with almost a 100 Senior citizens and youngsters standing together to voice the abuse meted out to Senior citizens across all sections of the Society

Ms.Parvathamma, the senior official from the Department for the Empowerment of Differently Abled and Senior Citizens, explaining to the public regarding the proactive steps taken by the Government to provide support services to Senior Citizens. She appreciated the efforts taken by Nightingales Medical Trust for the cause of the Senior Citizens and urged elders to feel free to call the 1090, a toll free number for elders in distress.

A street play that demonstrated financial abuse to the elderly, by their own family members was performed by the Elders of Nightingales Sandhya Kirana, a day care centre for the marginalized elders.

Following which, a road show was flagged off. Volunteers and the Elders helpline team, distributed stickers and handbills at four major junctions in Bangalore, raising awareness among the public on elder abuse; motivate, support the elders in distress and helpline services
